Shouldn't Freedonia grant citizenship to libertarians only? Why should
citizenship be granted to those who don't believe in libertarianism; won't this
be a threat to our Freedom?
----
When Freedonia is established there will be some forms of political dissent,
and we will undoubtedly have citizens who are disenchanted statists. I have
considered allowing only libertarian-minded people to become citizens, both now,
and when we are established. However, I can not in good conscience allow the
Freedonian government to decide who can and can not live in Freedonia based
on ideology. For what kind of free country would we have if only those who thought
a certain way could live there? And what government official would be in charge of
making this determination? Would he make those decisions fairly? Also, if the
government gains the power to discriminate in this way, it could open the door for
discrimination on other grounds, perhaps by wealth, religion, or race.
If we were going to attempt to make a new nation out of a homogeneously-minded
society, then our system of constitutional monarchy would be unnecessary, perhaps
even undesirable. With such a population, a pure republic or democracy would work
best. However, creating a politically homogeneous society is impossible. Can a
government actually determine an individuals beliefs and keep out those who do not
conform? What of the libertarian who marries someone that disagrees? Or of two
libertarian parents who have a dissenting child? I do not have answers to these
questions.
I believe that a completely open society is morally right, but apart from this belief,
an open society will be inevitable. This is why our new model of constitutional monarchy
was devised, to create a government which will be able to preserve freedom for
everyone, even in the face of diverse interests.
